The throes of a maturing democracy

A security guard refuses to carry the luggage of a former head of a nation, an aiforce pilot refuses to fly the scion of a family ruling  a nation by default, and a farmer stands up and calls for inter-state river water disputes to be settled by farmer collectives: Politicians! You won’t any more trade in our distress, he says.  Each of these individuals holds alive the hope of a true democracy, such as imagined by Subramanya Bharathi: where each one of us would be king, indeed, each of us a ruler of this land.
