Food for thought: Of faith in the divine, in science, and in the self

Indians who face difficulty in getting a visa to move abroad have now got a God to solve their problem.  A Sikh shrine [Gurdwara] in a village near Jalandhar in the north Indian city of Punjab receives about fifty toy aeroplanes from people who believe the offering will help their dreams to go/ settle abroad come true. No one can say when this belief took root or how it all began. Even more interestingly, the management of the temple distributes the toy planes among poor children every Sunday.

Stephen Hawking turned seventy today. He was given only a few years to live when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, a motor neurone disease, when he was a twenty-one year old student at Cambridge.

Food for the palate: Banana rasayana

Peel and slice 1 big banana into biteable bits. Add 2 teaspoons of finely shredded/ grated fresh coconut, 1 teaspoon of ghee, 1 teaspoon of coarsely ground jaggery [preferred] or 1 tsp of sugar or 1 tsp of honey. Toss and serve fresh or chilled.
