VENGEANCE LEADS TO AN ETERNAL WAR …………

Is there ever an end to this? Like Gandhi said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth would only leave the whole world blind and toothless. Forgiveness leads nowhere, as it only makes us feel righteous (see earlier post on Love and Forgiveness) and anger is something we cannot help taking recourse to when we feel wronged, disappointed, frustrated on our behalf or on behalf of someone or something beloved (see earlier post on Love and Anger). So, where does this eternal war of vengeance end? How can it end? Perhaps, this story has a message:

Once upon a time, there were two rich men in a village. Lets say they were called Ayy and Bee. Ayy had a child called Cee and Bee had a child named, what else, Dee.

Ayy challenged Bee to a duel once and killed him using unfair means. Bee’s child, Dee, promised to take revenge and, in due course, did.

Dee killed Cee in the presence of Cee’s child, Zee.

Zee cried, shouted, screamed, and promised to avenge the murder of his father. But Cee’s wife told her son, Zee: “Your grandfather killed Dee’s father. To take revenge, Dee killed your father. Now, if you take revenge for this by killing Dee or Dee’s children, their descendants will see that you and your children perish. This war of vengeance can go on for all time, till eternity. So, let us bear our sorrow like a cross. Let us not turn our sorrow into a weapon to kill.”
